The Nigerian Flying Eagles will not win an eighth Under-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) crown after they lost 3-4 on penalties to
Mali in yesterday’s semifinal played in Niger.

Both teams were tied on one after extra-time after which Valentine Uzornwafor and Okon Aniekeme lost their ensuing penalty shootouts for Mali to proceed to only their second final of this Under-20

Mali had earlier opened scoring in the 78th minute through Mamadou Troare, who fired past a stranded goalkeeper Olawale Oremade after receiving a precise pass from one of his teammates.

Nigeria however drew level four minutes from time when substitute Pascal Durugbor thundered
home a loose ball inside the box past Malian goalkeeper Koita.

It was a sweet revenge for the Malians who had lost to Nigeria in the semifinal of the Under-20 WAFU Cup held in Togo last December.

The Flying Eagles will now play the losers’ final
on Saturday.
